Whether you are contemplating a career as a paralegal, currently taking paralegal courses, are an entry-level paralegal or a seasoned veteran of the field, your local association will be one of the best resources in terms of your education and career growth.
Your local association works hard to provide educational meetings and seminars. My local association has enlisted speakers from: our local District Court of Appeal, city counsel, a local attorney who spoke concerning the Unlicensed Practice of Law (UPL), and a local sole practitioner who provided insight into the area of social security law.
All of the above-referenced speakers provided insight into courts and areas of law that were previously unknown to most of the attending members.
For those who were considering a career in paralegal studies, this "insider's view" provided an opportunity to determine whether or not this was the right career choice.
For paralegal students, a look inside many different areas of law provided a way to determine what type of law firm best fit their interests, personality and skill sets.
Entry-level and seasoned veteran paralegals were provided with a clear picture of how the District Court of Appeal functions, what to be aware of concerning UPL and much more.
While my association is affiliated with the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), many of our membership are not NALA certified paralegals. All who are interested in the paralegal career are welcome to attend whether it be as a student, guest, general member or associate.
First, take the time to visit your local association's website.
Second, plan to attend the next general membership meeting. Get to know the board and attending members. If you are contemplating this career, ask the board and/or members questions concerning the available career opportunities in your city. Does the association offer a mentoring program?
Finally, get involved in your local association. Assist with the newsletter, website, volunteer for one of the many committees. Your help is needed and you will benefit greatly from your involvement as well.
